Tracy Public Library

James Zarzana is originally from Sacramento, Calif., but has lived in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota.  He holds a BA in English from St. Mary’s College of California and an MA in English from Sacramento State University. In 1989 he came to Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall as an assistant professor.  He is a senior member of the Department and is moving into partial retirement to give himself more time for his writing.

“The Marsco Dissident” is the first of four speculative science fiction novels in The Marsco Saga. It is set in a world ruled by a single megacorporation that emerged from the ashes of plagues and wars, when cyber-warfare rendered computer systems nearly inoperable. Now, Marsco commands Earth and its colonies throughout the solar system.

Pioneer Women in Southwest Minnesota

1880-1915

Pioneer Women of Southwestn MinnesotaPioneer Women are often portrayed in two stereotypical ways, as the steadfast farmwife (the “sunbonneted helpmate” as one historian termed it), or the overworked drudge. In contrast to these two stereotypes, however, women living in Southwest Minnesota in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were neither overworked nor supportive but invisible farmwives. Instead, women were integral parts of our rural communities and made important economic, cultural, and even political contributions.

This project was funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s arts and cultural heritage.
