The Joys of Love

by Madeleine L'Engle

When Mr. Price offered twenty-year-old Elizabeth an apprenticeship at his theatre for the summer of 1946, Elizabeth's cherished dream of being an actress began to come true.  Now it's August, and  Elizabeth feels more alive than she's ever felt before--she's learning as much as she possibly can from the other apprentices, the members of the professional company, and the stars who come each week to work at the theatre. She has also found three kindred spirits:  Jane, another talented apprentice actress; Ben, the madcap assistant stage manager; and, especially Kurt, the young director of the company, who is also the first man Elizabeth kissed who has really meant something to her.

The one Saturday, several things happen that shake up Elizabeth's perfect summer.  In the days that follow she learns about the harsh realities of theatre life and of love--and about the joys of both.  Written during the 1940's, this moving coming-of-age story is now being published for the first time with an introduction by the author's granddaughter, Lena Roy.
