War on the Prarie

Tuesday, October 18 at 2:15 PM
Slayton Public Library Community Room

Slayton Public Library and Murray County Central Schools welcome Carrie Ehlert Newman on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. Carrie will give presentations for students in the high school auditorium at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm.

War on the Prairie book coverDescription: In August of 1862, the United States was bitterly fighting a dreadful war to rid the country of slavery. At the same time, new states in the Midwest and west struggled with the tensions between settlers and Native Americans. In Minnesota, the Dakota were pushed beyond human endurance. Starving and without any hope of help, they lashed out. Hundreds of settlers were caught in the middle. This book tells the story of two young girls trying to survive as war engulfs the prairie. Margaret is a German settler, her friend is Winona, a Dakota girl. Will their teamwork help them reach safety before it’s too late?

The public is invited for a special presentation in the Slayton Public Library community room at 2:15 pm. Copies of “War on the Prairie” will be available for sale and refreshments will be served.

Carrie Ehlert NewmanAbout the Author: Carrie spends a great deal of her time with history. When she isn’t researching possible books or writing, she busies herself teaching history to middle schoolers at Murray Junior High in Saint Paul. She also enjoys reading and gardening creatively.

This event is made possible through a SAMMIE Teen Co-op Young Adult Author Visit Grant.

eBooks MN

Ebooks Minnesota, an online ebook collection spearheaded by Minnesota’s libraries, is open to Minnesota readers. The collection is accessible online at and via free apps from iTunes, Google Play, and Kindle. There is no charge to libraries or individuals who wish to use the collection, and no username or password is required. Ebooks Minnesota is open to all readers within Minnesota’s borders.

No process is required to “check out” a book. Readers can access any book in the collection at any time regardless of how many other readers are also using that book. This feature makes the collection particularly useful for schools that may wish to assign a single book to an entire class or even an entire school. Likewise, community book clubs, no matter how large, can read books together without worrying about checkout limits or due dates.

The collection contains more than 2,000 books, including titles from these Minnesota publishers: ABDO, Lerner Publishing Group, Cherry Lake Publishing, University of Minnesota Press, Milkweed Press, and Coffeehouse Press. Nonfiction titles from Arcadia Publishing about Minnesota and its history are also included in the collection. A selection of popular titles that are in the public domain, such as "Dracula." and “Jane Eyre,” completes the collection.
