2016 SPRING PROGRAMS

April 20 – Joel Karsten – Straw Bale Gardening
Lakefield Library at 1:00 p.m.
Heron Lake Library at 6:00 p.m.

Breaking New Ground!  Joel Karsten, a farm boy who grew up tending a soil garden like other gardeners have for centuries, shook up the gardening world with his first book describing his breakthrough Straw Bale Gardening concept.  Grow a garden without pulling weeds, without the heavy lifting and without getting down on your hands and knees like traditional gardening requires.  If you thought the only place to grow healthy vegetable crops was in black dirt, you’ll be inspired by the science and biology Karsten explains in his presentation.

April 27 – Renee Wendinger – Last Train Home
Lakefield Library at 1:00 p.m.
Heron Lake Library at 6:00 p.m.

Renée is from southern Minnesota and is the youngest of five children. Her mother, Sophia (Kaminsky) Hillesheim, 1917 orphan train rider, was one of the children of the orphan trains taking part in a phenomenal journey from New York City to the Midwest.  As an avid historian, Renée has researched the epoch of the largest mass migration of children to occur in American history for decades. Inspired by her mother, Renée's orphan train books embrace authoritive research with compelling stories from the people who “made history” aboard the orphan trains of New York.
