History of the Adrian Branch Library

The Adrian Branch Library began as a library station in 1941, set up through the WPA Library Program. After one year, each WPA library station in Nobles County were given the option of becoming a permanent library. The City of Adrian opted to become a permanent library. In 1943, the library in Adrian became a permanent branch of the Nobles County Library. The Nobles county libraries are members of the Plum Creek Library System.

Olive Gladhill was the first Librarian (1941-1949), followed by Mary Erlandson (1949-1969). For a few years, the library was open a few hours a week and manned by the bookmobile Librarian, Jim Rotschafer (1969-1974). Mr. Rotschafer was replaced by Luann Flygare (1974-1988). The current Librarian is Meredith Vaselaar (1989 – present). The current staff includes Library clerks Joan Johnson and Cathy Marsh.

In this, its 75th year, the Adrian Branch Library has more than 1,600 card-carrying patrons. More than 10,000 people come through its doors every year. The library carries books, magazines, audio-books, movies, and newspapers, with more materials available through its Inter-Library-Loan program, including cake pans and puppets. In 2012, eBooks were added to the database and patrons can now download eBooks and audiobooks onto their electronic devices. All library services are FREE for everyone!

The Adrian Branch Library has an extensive Genealogy section and continues to add to its database of digital photographs and documents. The public is encouraged to contact the Librarian for requests, and also to donate digital images to the collection. (See homepage for contact information.)

Throughout each year, the Adrian Branch Library hosts programs for all ages, including a Winter Reading Program for teens and adults, a Summer Reading Program for children and teens; there are also programs sponsored by the Adrian Branch Library and often held in the Commons Area of the Adrian Elementary School. Past programs have included music, dancing, henna tattoos, instruction on stage hand-to-hand combat presented by members of the Guthrie theatre, ghosts talks by Chad Lewis, Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, authors such as Mary Logue and William Kent Krueger, and a visit from Laura Ingalls Wilder (aka: Melanie Springer).
